washington, july 27, 1999 associated press:
"a federal safety agency has upgraded an investigaion into millions of daimler chrysler minivans and general motors pickups because of possible gas tank leaks during side-impact crashes that could spark fires.
" during a federal crash test of a 1999 dodge caravan minivan on january 5, the hose that channels gasoline from the gas pump into the minivan's fuel tank pulled loose from the tank, and half the tank's test fuel spilled out, the agency report said. the crash test simulates a vehicle crashing into the side of a minivan at 30 mph.
"the national highway traffic administration also is looking at the tanks on the later model dodge caravan and grand caravan minivans, chrysler town and country minivans and plymouth voyager and grand voyager minivans."
